If You Love Children...

It is late, and I am tired. But I am also inspired. As I was washing dishes tonight, I finished watching a documentary worth seeing: Consuming Kids.

If you love children, work with children, buy gifts for children, or care about the future this documentary is relevant and potent. If I weren't so tired, I would offer more review and more thoughts of my own--but gosh will I sleep again? Fortunately, Isaac only wakes 2 or 3 times to nurse, so I'm not as sleep deprived as I might be with a 3-month-old.

Quick notes: Isaac is laughing now, at having his shirt pulled over his head, silly rhymes with hand motions, and being tickled. What fun! Alten has a new haircut (the worst one I've done yet says the perfectionist inside me), we had a "Kombucha, Popcorn, Haircutting Party."

A Bit About Us

We are farming in Trotwood, Ohio, after five years' experience in small-scale agriculture. In early 2009 we completed a three-year apprenticeship with Ecology Action in GROW BIOINTENSIVE^®mini-farming and spent the following growing season as field coordinators at EA's partner site, Christ's Church of the Golden Rule.
Our first three seasons were spent leading internships, getting our bearings in a fairly unpredictable climate, adding to our knowledge, and learning how to be the best parents we can be.
The next five were spent working on our home and learning to be the best parents we can be.
Now we're getting back to the garden part. And, of course, still working on that parenting thing!

Ecology Action -- The non-profit that teaches and researches Grow Biointensive. Willits, CA.

Golden Rule Garden -- Partner site to Ecology Action's research garden, a combined project of EA and Christ's Church of the Golden Rule. Willits, CA.

Grow-Biointensive Agricultural Center of Kenya -- No shortage of programs with a large local and regional impact. Thika, Kenya.

Pacifica Gardens -- A dynamic and inspiring community garden project co-founded by Loretta O'Brien, a 2007 Ecology Action intern. Pacifica, CA.

Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association -- Our state's organic-and-beyond agriculture support. They do good things regionally and nationally. And they have cool art. OH.

Pesticide Action Network -- A global alliance working to eliminate the use of noxious chemicals in agriculture and stop proliferation of GMO's.

A Few Good Organizations - Peace, Justice, and Development

New Community Project -- A faith-based organization that aims to change the plight of the global abused. It works both through international initiatives and educating North Americans, who can easily be part of the problem or the solution. Elgin, IL and Harrisonburg, VA.

Solar Cookers International -- A proponent of using passive-solar cooking technology globally, thereby addressing health, women's safety, and deforestation. Sacramento, CA.

Christian Peacemaker Teams -- An organization that trains individuals to stand between oppressor and oppressed using creative nonviolence. At the request of local communities, teams will travel to places where such violence is taking place to accompany and document the situation.

Brethren Disaster Ministries -- A program of the Church of the Brethren, it makes use of church funds to rebuild storm- and disaster-damaged homes. Volunteers travel on their own dime to project sites nationally and internationally, where room and board are provided to them while they work in teams rebuilding and repairing homes in the area.
